The Marathon - No Wall, Only Intention- Colorful Contemporary Modern Painting by American Abstract Artist Philip Noyed

The Marathon - No Wall, Only Intention - 2009

oil on canvas | 48" x 36" | by philip noyed

I painted "Marathon" after I qualified for the Boston Marathon. I had run three marathons earlier and each time "hit the wall" around mile 19. Hitting the wall is when you run out of energy or your body is sore and so you start slowing down. I explained "hitting a wall" to a friend and she said, "there's no wall, only intention." What if it is the mind that limits us by believing in walls first and not believing in our intentions? So, when I ran the qualifying marathon and I was at mile 19, I thought, "no walls, only intention" and ran faster. This painting starts with the starting line and moves through to the finish line. Volunteers give water to runners and cheer them on. I you look closely, you'll see the soles of my shoes incorporated into the design.
